What is pumpd?
Pumpd is a social networking implementation of competition that is currently built as an addon to facebook. Facebook handles events, however there is much left to desire. Current facebook events are based upon the premise that anything can be an event, including a movie night with friends. Pumpd handles events differently, the goal being to have all events competitive in nature. More features are available following this premise, including but certainly not limited to statistics, bragging, taunting, and getting PUMPD!
Why does this only work with facebook?
Facebook provides the perfect venue for pumpd event implementation. Reason being, because most events handled by pumpd require personal physical proximity to other participants. Other social networking implementations are not necessarily limited to such geographical structures. Future plans to integrate other social networks or even provide a stand alone social networking service are currently up in the air, mostly because the man power and budget just doesn't exist. We don't get paid for this, and we are using our personal funds for financial costs such as domain registrations, webhosting, content and coding development, and of course, the caffeine necessary to power our typing fingers. How do I challenge a friend to *event*?
When you come to the pumpd homepage, you will notice it is pretty bare. This is because you are not logged in to facebook. What you need to do is log via the link on the right side of the page, and you will be redirected back to the pumpd events homepage. If this is your first time visiting pumpd, you will be asked to enter an email address to which pumpd notifications can be sent. To configure what notifications pumpd will send you, click on the 'my account settings' button, and configure as you wish. After you have entered an email address, you will notice a list of events in the center column, and a list of your friends in the left hand column. Pick a friend, and pick an event. If all participation conditions for the event you chose have been met, the event will be automatically created. Congratulations!
Why do you want me to enter my email address?
So we can tell you what's going on...duh! Your email address is sacred to us, and we will never EVER sell or give it to anyone else without your expressed permission. Only notifications you want will be sent to your email address, and you have the ability to limit this or change your nofication email address at any time via the 'my account' page.
The event I want isn't listed...what do I do?
Name the event yourself in the custom activity / event field! However, this option leaves you entirely in the open for configurations of the event. You will be responsible for making sure the right amount of people are added to the event. The only problem with this method is that we will not keep track of certain statistics for this event. We will only list this event as Custom Activity/Event and a win/loss when it comes to statistics. Not enough for you? Well then submit your activity/event idea to us, and we'll get on it right away. Please be patient with future event implementation, however, as both of us, and our graphic illustrator (Carl's woman), have full time jobs and are very busy.
How do I configure the event?
Once the event has been created, it gives you a big "Challenge Created" button and a View: "http://pumpd.org/?c=XXXX" link. You can click on either one and be taken to the page reserved for that event. You can then configure when, and where the event will be held, along with adding more people to the event if you would like. Also on the event page is a share link (facebook style), a post to their wall link, and a private message link. If the person you have challenged has not used pumpd before, then we do not have their email address and cannot contact them, so you need to do this!
How do I change how you notify me of pumpd events?
In the upper right hand corner on every page is a "my account" button that will take you to your account. Here you can configure what email address we contact you at, and what we may tell you about.
How do I delete a challenge after it's done?
Don't delete it! It will be archived for future reference. Only delete an event if you messed up or if the event will not take place. Deleting an event will purge all information regarding this event from the system, and it is GONE FOREVER! Once events have been completed, they will be archived and will be accessible via your statistics page.
Why do want me to follow up on events?
We need to know what happened! Did you kick some ass or get your face firmly planted in the dirt? Either way we want to know! Wouldn't you like to know if you're the best person on campus in basketball, fooseball or beerpong? You can brag about it in your facebook profile, and find other worthy opponents to challenge.
How do I share my event with others, including people who aren't part of the event?
People who are not part of the event and not logged into facebook aren't going to be able to see much, thats for sure. Someone who you want to share the event with will need to log into facebook and be allowed to see the event. You can control who sees what via your facebook profile privacy.
I have an idea for a new feature, how do I tell you?

Who made this shabby addon for facebook anyway?
Hey, that hurts our feelings! Austin T. Griffith and Carl J. Moeller are the executive monkeys in charge of pumpd.org. Each has a blog with their own name in the domain (i know, isn't it sad?) http://austingriffith.com and http://carlmoeller.com respectively. It all happened when Carl realized there was no social networking site that involved intense competition. Sure, facebook has events, but it's just not up to snuff. So rather than make a stand alone social networking site for competition, because he's lazy, Carl thought it would be a good idea to leech off of facebooks users and use the facebook API to build a site that interacts with the facebook network. However, Carl wasn't smart enough to do it himself, nor did he have enough time to do it himself and learn about it. So he started cruizing the facebook addons to find some talent. He came upon a facebook addon called 'boredonthebook' that used the facebook API, and checked out the author. Turns out, it was Austin Griffith, a fellow electrical engineer, and programming extrodinare. Carl contacted Austin and told him about the idea, and they were off to the races. That all started on Feburary 26th, 2007, and it's been a long road since. Want more information about Austin, Carl or pumpd? Visit their blogs, or visit the pumpd blog, and GET PUMPD!
